DIARY ENTRIES

An audio recording by Citizen No. 563

Scraps of diaries found in an old suitcase at the bottom of a dried up well. The different handwriting suggests more than one owner- perhaps a family, house-mates, a group for friends or just a kleptomaniac with a diary fetish.

Diary 1.

“Thursday, I think it’s Thursday, maybe it’s Friday.
Locked up but can’t stay still. Diving into projects without thinking. Projects that don’t need doing. But I just need to keep busy doing something. Doing something that doesn’t require thinking.

Yeah, pretty sure it is actually Thursday today. And then Friday tomorrow.”

Diary 2.

“Michael brought the kids over to visit today. They loved the sticky date, little darlings. We had ice cream too, and went out for a stroll to the gardens. Peace lasted for a few hours, until Michael brought up the sinking again. It was the trees, he said, they seemed shorter and sickly. Ridiculous! It’s the botanic gardens, they’re deciduous. They lose their leaves every year.

He continues to drive this nonsensical wedge between us, insists on it. If the town was sinking, there would be academics, studies, evidence! As it stands there is just babble and rumour mongering.
